The Watsu® Experience

Escape the pressures of the every day world and enter the fluid waters of Watsu where time stands still. Relax into the gentle hands of the therapist and sense that this is an experience beyond words. Let the warmth of the water, the soothing rotations, spirals and tractioning moves engage your body in a supported dance that floats away all sense of stress.

You are the water. You are the movement. Your tissue sinks into a deep awareness that has no language. You float, you turn, you find stillness, and your heart fills with the dynamic aliveness that is water. You breathe and it seems the water breathes with you. There is no effort. There is only the presence of the moment.

Watsu literally means Shiatsu in the Water. It evolved under the guiding hands of Harold Dull in the Harbin Hot Springs of California. Since then, therapists from across the world have been drawn to this approach, sensing that this is a way of deeper integration and spiritual understanding for their clients.

Watsu is a massage form, a deeply relaxing endeavor, a step into the healing nature of water connecting mind, body and spirit. It offers attention to specific tissue concerns while engaging the weaving, rotating, rocking motions of movement in water to create an environment many describe as ‘being in the womb’. This rhythmic communication opens the door to a deeply harmonic and meditative state.

And Still More Words from Clients

MY EXPERIENCE WITH WATSU

I find water relaxing to a point but I still have some basic fears of the water.  When I first heard about Watsu, I decided to give it a try – I was curious.  During my first experience, it took me a little while to relax but I trusted my provider and I was soon able to benefit from the session.  I felt so relaxed almost like what I would imagine a fetus must experience in the womb.  Areas of my body that were tight or painful seemed to release the tension during the session.  I especially noticed that lower back and hip areas were more comfortable afterward.  I still enjoy therapeutic massage but I feel that adding Watsu to my plan for good health is of great benefit.

As a Continuum Movement Teacher, I believe in the transformative and healing powers contained in the fluid body.  By enticing, invoking, and stimulating the streams of our fluid nature, we awaken a life force, an intrinsic vitality, an undulating wisdom.  It is often stated  that we are fluid beings who have arrived on land…a wonderful history. Each Watsu session with Cathy was exciting and satisfying…Cathy and water, working in harmony, moving me down and around.  Her graceful support and guidance created a rich movement exploration into sensation, and the opportunity to dissolve much of my physical and mental tension.  With her lead, I was able to follow my body’s appetite for movement.  It was truly a non-linear experience. I would breathe, then drop down again into a deeper dissolving…enjoying the exquisite sensations and creative shaping’s.  After each Watsu session, I felt  an ease in my body,  an energetic renewal, and slept soundly."

I have fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis. I find it very difficult to relax my muscles and my brain. From the 6 Watsu experiences I have had I find it to be a great source of relaxation. It is a great feeling to be floating and not have to worry about where you are going. To trust someone to get you there safely so I can let go of my muscles.

I have enjoyed the Watsu treatment several times and each has been an enriching opening into a familiar kind of rebirthing of my body, mind and soul. The intimacy shared in an unspoken manner with Cathy, the water and complete relaxation contributes to a kind of embryonic recollection that can orientate itself according to my needs. If a rebirthing is desired or simply an occasion to trust and feel at a profound level  the opportunity to go with the flow can produce surprising results  If the body is 90% water and is received therapeutically in the water by a seasoned practitioner the level of healing possibilities is relative to what the body can induce. I love it and feel completely at home from one session to the next. After all, I’m a crab.

Greetings Ashima,

Don’t know if this will promote your practice but it fairly describes my experiences.

From the very first moment, Watsu was a delightful opportunity for my soul to get up and dance.  I had no aches, pains, maladies or injuries when I came to Cathy, just the usual burning yearning to access the Light.  Cathy is exceptionally well-versed at allowing that space of tranquil trust to emerge.  So even though this was my first dive, I immediately learned that something very primal occurs when embraced within the fluid environment that is not so readily accessible under the restraint of gravity.  There was a deeply rooted thrill that rose up as soul realized it suddenly had an unfettered chance to express itself .  It seemed like the emotional adhesive I apply to all my accumulated baggage was dissolving in the dance and a feeling of freedom like no other swept through me.  All movement was initiated from forces within me.  This was the observer state that I strive for in meditation and the wild ride I watched was a paradox of explosive serenity.  After a brief interlude for grounding the elation settled into an internal exploration of Oneness.  My heartbeat seemed like the pulsing of the universe.  The sounds of my breathing were the hush of time travel.  While it is a marvel to look at in retrospect, it was a perfectly natural state of being at the time, adrift in the sacred.  That’s all I recall.

My residual effects can be compared to the aa-haa feeling of finally grasping a sutra, the comfort of dawning truth that was there all along the perfect complement to my meditative practice.

Feel free to include my name and use this as you see fit, Ashima.  Thanks for the opportunity to assist!

One  in Her Cosmic Embrace,

Marty

As a practicing Shaman, the mystical is the world I walk in a great deal of the time. Never, the less, my Watsu experience just astounded me! It was like having the perfect birth experience. I have never had another experience like it. My frequent experiences have been powerful as well. Kathy makes you feel completely safe in the water, and I can not recommend this experience highly enough.   Harriet Watson, M.S. Practicing Shaman

The Watsu experience is like no other you will ever have! The healing effects of the water, coupled with the mystical effects of the experience bring you into another world other than this one. Do not delay in giving yourself this gift.
